U.N. marks its 60th with a touch of Eastern spirit

NEW YORK—The diamond 60th anniversary of the United Nations is upon it, and the hallowed institution is marking the event with a photography exhibition by Wang, Wusheng, a Chinese photographer living in Tokyo.

The event, at U.N. headquarters in New York, is called “Spirit of the East.” It consists of 42 photographs of World Heritage-designated Mount Huangshan in China, and reproductions of 10 drawings by renowned Japanese painter Kaii Higashiyama (1908-1999).

Wang, 60, has been taking pictures of Mount Huangshan, located in Anhui province in eastern China, for 30 years.

Higashiyama was his teacher, be says.

He was first taught by Higashiyama while visiting Japan as a student in 1981. When Wang published a collection of his photographs in 1988, Higashiyama wrote the preface.

“My works and those of Mr. Higashiyama are different in style,” said Wang. “But both of them have the spirit of the ‘harmony’ of the East.

“Though China and Japan now have a common heart in culture and arts. In the United Nations, which is mankind’s hope, I want people from around the world to see harmony and peace,” Wang said.

Higashiyama’s 10 exhibited drawings include the famous “Forest with a White Horse.”

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan attended the opening of the exhibition, which will run until March 10.
